Dept. of Traditional Arts and Crafts

Educational objectives

The traditional ceramics major provides an overview of traditional ceramics, including celadon, buncheong ware, white porcelain, and earthenware. Through apprenticeship-type training with National Intangible Cultural Heritage Holders and other artisans, it aims to cultivate creativity and professionalism among students who will lead in the succession of traditional Korean ceramics as inheritors of tradition, ceramic artists who will further develop through their use of tradition, makers of practical pottery who will spearhead the further development of culture in everyday life, and in other capacities. The curriculum features ceramic theories for analysis of ceramic artifacts and practical training on using their techniques; molding methods that express the characteristics of different ceramic styles as well as both aesthetics and functionality; study of ceramic materials and production techniques; practical training under the instruction of artisans on pattern carving, glazing, firing and other areas. This is meant to pass on traditional ceramics in their original form as well as to take a more contemporary interpretation of aesthetics. Through this process, students will be ready to begin their careers as successors to traditional ceramics that are intangible cultural property, ceramic artists, makers of everyday pottery objects, and other craft-related professionals. Students are also advised to move onto graduate school to engage in academic research and systematic modern succession of traditional ceramics. Also available are exchange programs with foreign universities and other related organizations (e.g. Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in China and Tokyo University of the Arts in Japan) to assist students in acquiring expertise in their major as well as the language skills, international perspective and competitiveness they will need.
