Dept. of Traditional Arts and Crafts

Educational objectives

This major focuses on traditional painting in general, encompassing dancheong coloring, Buddhist painting, court painting, portraiture, and landscapes. Through imitation of the traditional techniques of the nation’s various genres of cultural property spanning ink and wash painting, color painting, and their applications, the goal is to pass on this heritage and incorporate today’s sense of aesthetics. The program aims to develop talent and professionalism among those who will play a leading role in the transmission of traditional Korean painting—inheritors of tradition, traditional painters who will build upon and further develop what they know, and specialists who will study cultural property paintings. Based on the theory of painting for analysis of cultural property paintings and practical training, the curriculum features imitation of dancheong, Buddhist painting, court painting, and other forms of traditional painting; artwork studies; and study of janghwang (traditional mounting). It is designed to facilitate the inheritance of original forms of traditional painting through re-creation. Dancheong experts designated as National Intangible Cultural Heritage Holders are invited to provide training in and visits to the field, and special lectures to strengthen on-site education. Students will recognize the beauty of traditional painting as they are provided with a variety of educational environments and learn how to produce traditional painting works. As such, the major cultivates and actively supports talented people who will inherit our traditions and establish new ones in the current day.
