Department introduction

The Department of Traditional Arts and Crafts aims to establish a genuine identity of art culture based on tradition, art, and crafts, and develop professionalism in talented individuals who are aware of and have the ability to lead in expanding the scope of this identity.

The department offers the only majors in Korea that specialize in traditional arts and crafts, with practical learning in four sub-levels: traditional painting, traditional sculpture, traditional ceramics, and traditional clothing & textiles. Such practical learning will strengthen the system of knowledge around the arts, facilitating the ability in its graduates to lead the future of national cultural policy and contribute to the creative succession and development of tradition.

Educational objectives

Through creative integration of excellent traditional craft arts into today's craft scene, the identity of art culture rooted in real life will be established. Talented practitioners will gain professional awareness of the need to expand the craft arts, and the skills to lead in such an endeavor.

Educational content

The only traditional art and craft majors in Korea, offered by the Department of Traditional Arts and Crafts, are divided into four sub-levels: traditional painting, traditional sculpture, traditional ceramics, and traditional clothing & textile, all intended to create a solid foundation for the succession of the traditional artistic spirit to people today—based on practical experiential education—for the future of national cultural policy. In this way, the department intends to systematically develop talented professionals who will creatively develop the essence of arts and crafts by working alongside National Intangible Cultural Heritage Holders.
